I am a birth doula! Part 2

*Disclaimer: Photos and details shared with permission from my clients.*

Let us fast-forward a couple weeks, I had a chance to meet with my friends Spencer and Alli 3 weeks away from her due date about being their doula and guess what…they wanted me! I felt so honored that they trusted me to join them during this really special time. We were able to meet twice for prenatal visits at their home to get a deeper understanding of their labor expectations, preferences, and for them to understand my role in all of this.

One morning I get an exciting text message from Alli, her water had broken during the night and they were headed to the hospital. I popped up out of bed so fast I couldn’t contain the excitement. Blake, my husband, could have thought I just won a million dollars. What’s funny is that it kind of felt like that. I kept in contact with Spencer during their check up. The doctors let them go home and labor a little bit longer, which was really nice. So I headed over to Spencer and Alli’s house around 11am. After many days of rain we were gifted with the most beautiful day. I stepped outside and noted the cool air, sun shining on the green grass, birds singing, and I said to myself “It’s a perfect day for a baby”.

The craziest part of all of this was I never felt nervous. I wasn’t scared. I didn’t have a doubt in my mind about what I was going to do. I was their doula and I was going to be there for them providing continuous emotional and physical support. What ever she needed me to do I was there. We arrived at the hospital a little after noon. For the rest of the day I gave back scratches, shoulder rubs, hip squeezes, position recommendations, words of affirmation, head rubs, sips of water, her my body to lean on, candy, and so much more. But what I really gave was my unconditional support and attention.

I believe I helped Spencer and Alli grasp the confidence they needed to work together as a team to have the unmediated childbirth she wanted. We did it! At 7:37 pm on June 4th, 2019 beautiful Aurora was born and so was her Mother and Father. It was the most amazing thing I have been able to be a part of. I cried holding her leg while she pushed, I cried as I got into my car, and I cried when I got home. To be a part of something so beautiful and to watch a mother give birth to her child is an indescribable event. Even though I was in her shoes doing the same thing 9 months ago this was totally different.

Later that night as I reflected over the day I had, this weird feeling over came me. The feeling that everything was inline like I was meant to be there for Alli. I was meant to be there in that exact moment in time. This feeling was like a big hug that said "Everything is going to be ok, this is exactly what you need to be doing."

I have always believed in the quote by Mark Twain, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” Well on June 4th, 2019 I found out why.

I am a birth doula.

Now I cry again.
